Addiction is a completely underrated topic in ADHD

Addiction is a completely underrated topic in ADHD

ADHD sufferers are extreme and they are constantly looking for more. That predisposes them to addiction. They are looking for the permanent happiness, the perfect life and they are constantly on the run from boredom and inner emptiness. So they have not learned to bear the adversities of life and they have unrealistic expectations of life. Also, they are driven and seekers and yet often do not know what they are looking for. Actually, it is harmony, fulfillment, contentment, but her unsteady nature drives her again and again, like the hunter who can only be satisfied after a successful hunt for a short time, because he knows that he will get hungry again and he has to take up the hunt again. It is like a constant hunting fever, on the one hand stimulus and tension, but also misery at the same time because normality and everyday life can often be so badly lived and endured. And what's the worst for an ADHD is boredom and everyday life because he does not feel challenged and stimulated here. He always needs a strong stimulus or tension in order to feel awake and attentive, otherwise he just gets a bit drowsy, bored and cannot summon up enthusiasm and concentration anymore.

In addition, often their childish immaturity. They want everything now and always, and can only postpone needs so hard. And if they do not get what they want, then they are quickly so frustrated that they think the world is going down. The more and more, the constant search for the ultimate kick makes them become adventurers and extreme athletes, because they have to set new records for themselves, only then they are satisfied.

Already as a child, the risks and the addictive potential become apparent. The ADHD child is restless, tense, mentally disturbed, unstable and often extremely dissatisfied. In addition, it has to cope with a collection of defeats, frustration and rejection and it already feels like an outsider in this world anyway. They have many unfulfilled dreams, unfulfilled longing for being accepted and belonging, much sadness and disappointment in themselves. They are full of suffered insults and fear of failure and not infrequently, the childhood was a constant stress especially when the environment was still disturbed.

Addiction can also be the result of a disappointed and defiant struggle, an expression of protest and the demonstration of otherness. The ADHD child can express his defiance and rebellion in his drug addiction because it does exactly what one does not expect from him and now deliberately also provokes an outsider role. It can live out its unfulfilled dreams of belonging to a drug peer group and so often the outsiders of the society, the outcasts and losers together in a group and draw together their hold through the cohesion in this group. This peer group has a tremendous impact, because the ADHD child may be receiving and receiving unconditional confirmation for the first time, and then he does not really care what the group's goals are.

So it may be that the child slips into wrong circles and seeks his foothold in a group that is increasingly drug addict, criminal or right-wing radical. United in defiance and rebellious rebellion, a group can convey a very strong sense of belonging, because shared suffering is half suffering. The defiant rebellion against the parents and the stuffy society are motor to get in the negative confirmation and to draw strength from the defiance. "You could tell me what you want, I'll do it anyway". The insults suffered for years can be experienced in this phase as a defiant triumph, to ignore despite all warnings about commandments and rational concerns and finally to live autonomy. That is only a pseudo-autonomy, but at least one. It is experienced as a challenge, like a just fight to fight, a fight: "I against the rest of the world". And indeed, the drug addict experiences a kind of strength and power, because it is hardly possible for his parents and fellow human beings to move him away from it. So it is also an attempt to compensate the low self-esteem. Quite a few people then live according to the motto: "Once the reputation has been ruined, it lives completely unabashedly".

Added to this is again this search for the kick and the escape of boredom. It is exciting to get drugs illegally and many a drug addict it is a big challenge not to get caught and he is fighting a lonesome heroism not to be in the barriers - no one.

On the other hand, ADHD teens can just try drugs, because they are curious and seducible and they do not worry about the consequences. They are reckless and quick to enthuse and "made first, then thought" they shoot once all warnings and concerns about drug use in the wind. Not that they do not know it, but at the moment it's easier to try something cool and it's sometimes shocking to experiment with the simplicity and naivety of drugs.

Of course, the drugs also promise quick luck, without having to do too much, at least in the short term. While you have to work out luck and success always, so you can quickly move into a state of drugs, which is pleasant and relaxing and the fast and relatively easy happiness produces. You can soothe the world so beautiful pink, so that you no longer have to take note of all the frustration and disappointments in life. It's an enticing way for ADHD sufferers: "having fun without having to do too much". They are so vulnerable because, on the one hand, they have a high standard of life but, on the other hand, they are not too willing to do much about it.

However, the effect of the drug is often also a need for self-treatment, because the ADHD sufferers often suffers significantly from constant mood swings and drift. In fact, many of these ADHD symptoms help and alleviate these symptoms, but unfortunately, this self-treatment attempt is usually ineffective and doomed to failure because the effects of the drugs are more severe than the ADHD symptoms. Treating ADHD symptoms with drugs is not a good problem-solving strategy and can be seen as a failed treatment attempt.

The entry drugs are nicotine and alcohol because they are easy to get and socially accepted. It has been proven that nicotine has a similar effect in the brain as dopamine or the agent methylphenidate. No one has recognized this more aptly than the inventor of the HB males: "Why go up in the air right now, prefer to attack ...” Alcohol also makes you calmer and at least moderately relaxed. The same goes for cannabis.

Since the ADHD sufferers also makes everything extreme and finds no measure, he cannot just smoke a few cigarettes or drink a glass of beer, but he does it once again extremely. Over 50% of all ADHD livers have an addiction problem and in addiction clinics 30-50% of clients are mostly undiagnosed ADHD patients. Overall, ADHD sufferers have a search risk at least twice as high as the normal population. However, we know that the early treatment of ADHD significantly reduces the risk of finding a child even in childhood, because children are better educated and overall develop better. Especially the treatment with stimulants, which are under the law of stunning, shows in the long term course, a significant search reduction and thus early treatment is an addiction prophylaxis. Currently, it is being researched whether ADHD patients who have become dependent also have to treat with stimulants or Atomoxetine to increase the success rates of addiction treatment, because these are not yet intoxicating.

But ADHD sufferers can also turn anything into an addiction. They manage to become dependent on the most normal things because they cannot find a measure. and so we distinguish between substance-based addictions and non-substance addictions

Substance-related addictions

Caffeine

Most ADHD sufferer operate a caffeine or Coca-Cola abuse, whereby the potential danger therein is limited. Too much caffeine can cause upset stomach and too much cola overweight.

Alcohol

The risk potential and the risks of alcohol are well known and need not be repeated here. One has to point out once again that alcohol and cigarettes are the entry-level drugs, even for tougher drugs. The current consumption behavior of young people regarding alcohol is extremely questionable. Combat drinking and alcohol flat rate are "in" with adolescents and the level of alcohol intoxication in adolescents is appalling.

Nicotine

The effects of nicotine are also known. Many ADHD sufferers are excessive smokers and they engage in a very impressive self-therapy, but with the price of health ruin. The addictiveness of nicotine is generally completely underestimated. It's harder to quit nicotine than heroin and this is the only way to explain why people can use up the money of a family home as an old human amputee with lung cancer in wheelchairs and that for decades they have been living these facts almost daily can read.

Nicotine mimics the effect of dopamine and regulates the ADHD level. It makes you calmer, more relaxed, more focused, mood-stable and enjoyable. Nicotine increases the power and concentration ability and reduces appetite. Even people who have stopped smoking after 40 years because they have become seriously ill, return to their original ADHD after such a long time. Because after more than half a year of abstinence, impulsivity and pronounced mood swings are no longer the effects of withdrawal, but the signs of ADHD that has existed since childhood, but is no longer kept at bay with nicotine. Perhaps despite many abstinence attempts, many of the ADHD sufferers continue to smoke because they cannot cope with the effects of their ADHD without medication or self-medication.

Cannabis, THC

Is a commonly used drug because it has a relaxing and balancing effect and feeling. It just does not "itch" any more and you finally have the serenity and patience that you have so long been missing in yourself. However, the problem is that even more egoist just reinforces the problem of the ADHD sufferers, who already has problems with his self-motivation and perseverance. He also begins to consume these drugs at the exact time it takes to make an effort and strive for a good school leaving certificate. Too much does not matter then "shit" and the ADHD teens then brings no more motivation to give his life a direction. It then shows increasingly an amotivalen syndrome with a zero-buck attitude - ... no desire for nothing.

And so valuable years of personality development are missed, in which one nebulizes the brain instead of maturing and growing in the difficulties of life. What young consumers often do not realize is that cannabis can also trigger massive anxiety and even psychoses that are difficult to treat. In the case of psychosis, hereditary disposition certainly plays a role, but who knows what genetic predispositions are dormant in him? And it is the psychosis triggered by cannabis, then it is u. Like the ghost from the bottle, which can hardly be banished back into the bottle, psychosis can be fatal, chronic, or require a long-lasting drug treatment.

Drugs

Basically, there are a number of drugs that are addictive. At the forefront are the tranquilizers (valium, tavor, lexotanil, etc.), which are often used in ADHD against restlessness and mood swings, but should not be prescribed in long-term use because they have a high addictive potential. Except in the treatment of emergencies in mental health situations, these drugs should no longer be prescribed at all. Furthermore, the painkillers have an addictive potency and ADHD sufferers tend to abuse them because they are often hard to withstand pain and can be very sensitive to pain.

Cocaine

Is also similar to the dopamine receptor, such as dopamine. Cocaine makes strong dependencies and personality changes, and withdrawals are very heavy.

Heroin

The effects are known in heroin. Especially by the I. v. Injections and joint use of syringes carries the risk of transmission of AIDS, hepatitis and many other diseases.

Ecstasy or Speed

The effect is similar to the Methylphenidate, or the stimulants, only it is not clear in what dosage and what degree of purity this substance is present. In overdose, it can lead to serious health damage to the death. As the chemical composition of the drug is unknown, as are its admixtures, these synthetically manufactured drugs have incalculable risks, especially if they are consumed with other drugs

LSD

Is also a synthetic drug that is highly hallucinogenic and carries a high risk of triggering massive anxiety and psychosis. It can also come months later to so-called flashbacks, I. that even without drug consumption out of the blue psychosis-like episodes can occur like under drugs.

Sweets

Sugar can stimulate serotonin production in the brain and make you a little happier for a short time. Many people have the experience that chocolate can make you happy. In some people, but a real craving for sweets, which clearly addictive character.

Eating disorder

But not only has the craving for sweets predisposed to addiction. We find in ADHD-learning more common eating disorders. In the sense of anorexia (anorexia nervosa), a bulimia or a food addiction. Here the food itself acts as an addictive substance, whereby according to the wholly or not principle either no food is taken up at all (anorexia) or excessive amounts (bulimia or food addiction).

Substantial addictions are understood as:

Workaholic

Again, the work cannot be dosed properly. The workaholic, so called the workaholics, cannot find an end, cannot relax anymore, works intermittently for a while, and feels like in a frenzy. His triumph is success and social recognition and he cannot get enough of it. The consequences are his health neglect, and all the consequences of a burnout syndrome, which can lead to depression, physical discomfort and anxiety. He is almost exploiting his body. When the energy tank is run empty and the workaholic does not have time to refuel, relax and find fun, then at some point the engine is at a standstill because there is no fuel or energy left. He also neglects social relationships and his family.

Sports

Since the ADHD sufferers can make everything addictive, he succeeds in doing sports excessively and thus also going beyond his own limits and ruthlessly exploiting the body. He may be able to hyper focus sports so much that everything else is neglected and he is completely limited to his sporting achievements and he tries again and again by increased effort u. U. even with the help of doping agents to top.

Activity

ADHD-he cannot sit still so hard and just do nothing positive. The word muse is a foreign word to them and they are always driven to search for something that stimulates them. The topic of relaxation, letting go, and letting go of the soul comes too short and so there are no valuable opportunities to regenerate oneself and find one's own center.

Games, gamble

ADHD sufferers have a pronounced play instinct and they are particularly inspired by winnings. This makes them additionally vulnerable to gambling addiction, because they can pursue their playful inclinations and on the other hand have a constant kick and find the necessary tension to stay constantly stimulated. In their recklessness and also brokers or stockbrokers who spend half the life on the Internet for supposed profits or loss limits.

Computer, video, television

The use of these media poses a major challenge for the ADHD sufferers, because many no longer find the blanks and swamp in front of the TV and computer. The typical TV behavior of the ADHD sufferer is demonstrated by the use of the remote control.

It's almost impossible for them to just watch a show, but driven by the fear of missing something or not being able to wait until the commercial is over, they zap through the programs so they often watch 3 movies at the same time. Although they are then considered to have grasped the content, but in fact they can only very superficially put together the stories with their jumping and leaping perceptual style.

Internet, eBay

ADHD sufferers can get lost in the Internet in the jungle of the offered opportunities and so it often happens that they log in to the Internet with a specific question and then spend hours browsing through the world, where they have long since their real goal from the Eyes have lost. Even eBay can be a trap because you can waste a lot of time on the constant search for bargains. EBay can be a mixture between the constant search for a special offer and gambling addiction. Lately, many are losing their lives in Facebook or living in virtual worlds such as World of Warcraft, etc.

Music

Even music can become an addiction, because you can overdo it. Many ADHD sufferers know this, because if you like a music, then you hear them 100 times in a row and then maybe never again.

Reading, fantasy

Again, the ADHD sufferers can dive into another world, even live in another world over days, without perceiving much around. You can then neglect everything else.

Shopping addiction, kleptomania, special offers

Even buying can be addictive, having and possessing, the constant craving for more. If you have too little money can also develop a stilt (kleptomania). However, such kleptomania can also be created by well-to-do people who seek the kick and the suspense by stealing, the crackle if they are caught this time.

Messier (lapse syndrome)

And then there is the addiction of fussing, of not being able to throw away, which can take terrifying proportions. It can reach threatening levels harmful to health if an affected person is not even able to dispose of moldy food and garbage.
