Tips for dealing with children and adolescents with ADHD

What parents can do themselves? Can parents do something to improve their child's behavioural problems? Through their educational influence, parents can influence the effects of ADHD and the behaviour of children.
What are the basic rules that help parents with their education?

Take the good sides of your child. Reinforce it in it. It also helps you to bridge difficult phases and show the child that they like it.

Praise your child.

Your child will find it harder to obey rules and complete tasks than other children. Therefore always praise it, if he succeeds. Positive reinforcement promotes the desired behaviour. Already the effort readiness should be recognized and also partial successes.

Establish clear rules.

Rules give your child support, orientation and security. Establish family rules that can be fulfilled together. Set clear boundaries.

Unique “ I ” messages.

Speak clearly, clearly, and facing the child, for example, "I want you to put all Legos in the red box!" Then check! Divide tasks into smaller sections that can be fulfilled as far as possible. So not: "Clean up your room!"

Strive for a reliable daily structure and cultivate rituals.

 As a result, the child can orient himself better during the course of the day and rather knows when which behaviour is desired.

When your child breaks a rule, you always respond consistently and immediately.

Appropriate negative sanctions for unwanted behaviour are e.g. as a time-out or points withdrawal.

Try to anticipate problems.

Some situations are particularly problematic for children with ADHD (e.g. visit, homework). Arrange in good time rules for these situations and rewards if successful (see point plans).

Keep the patience and overview.

Do you understand the peculiarities in the behaviour of the child? Try to stay calm, to keep your inner distance and patience.

Do not force anything.

Avoid discussions when the emotions overcook. Give yourself and your child a break, leave the room if necessary to solve the problem later with more composure.

Do something for yourself.

Children with ADHD cost a lot of strength. Pay attention to your own needs and sufficient time for relaxation. This also benefits your child
